An optimistic rollup is a Layer 2 system that assumes transactions are valid by default and relies on a challenge period where fraud proofs can be submitted if an invalid state transition is detected. This design minimizes on-chain computation, reducing fees for users, while still anchoring security to Ethereum. The tradeoff is that withdrawals to Ethereum L1 can take longer because the system must wait out the dispute window. Optimistic rollups are widely used for mainstream Ethereum scaling because they support EVM compatibility, enabling DeFi apps to migrate with minimal changes. For SEO and user research, “optimistic rollup vs zk rollup” and “Ethereum L2 withdrawal time” are common queries. In institutional contexts, optimistic rollups can support cheaper stablecoin transfers and trading while relying on Ethereum’s base settlement for finality and auditability. #Ethereum #VEI #VirtualEthereumIndex.
